What is the Midnight Sun Run?
Iceland's Midnight Sun Run: A Race Like No Other
The Suzuki Midnight Sun Run is one of Reykjavík’s most cherished traditions. Started in 1993, this one-of-a-kind running event takes place under the glow of Iceland’s Midnight Sun. It is one of the biggest running events in Iceland, and second only to the Reykjavík Marathon. Whether you’re a long-distance pro or an occasional jogger, immerse yourself in the lively streets of Reykjavík beneath the enchanting Midnight Sun. With 3 distances to choose from, you can join people of your ability on this unique course - if you’re looking for a special running challenge, this could be it!
The Suzuki running event happens around Summer Solstice, which falls on June 21st each year. Since the sun only dips below the horizon briefly during this time in Iceland, the race starts in the evening. And the fun doesn’t stop once the race is over. Post-run, you can join a pool party at Laugardalslaug - one of the best swimming pools in Reykjavík.

Midnight Sun Course Details
The Midnight Sun Run starts at Reykjavík’s Engjavegur street and finishes at the Laugardalur springs. This course has been accurately measured by an AIMS-certified measurer and is approved by the Icelandic Athletic Federation. You can choose to run either 5k, 10k, or a half marathon.
-
5k - This race is for all age groups. The course is mostly flat and loops around the various attractions in the Laugardalur valley such as a botanical garden, a family fun park, and its numerous sports halls.
-
10k - The 10k route takes you out of Laugardalur and into the Elliðaárdalur valley, home to the famous salmon river Elliðaár. You’ll have to conquer a hill to soak in the delights here, but you get to do it alongside a riding trail.
Half Marathon - Only those 15 or older are allowed to compete in the half marathon. It goes further into Elliðáardalur valley and over to Grafarvogur. The course is made solely of paths, going past the river Elliðaá, up to Lake Rauðavatn, and along a golf course before heading back to Laugardalur Valley. You’ll have 3 hours to complete the course.
