Discover Vök Geothermal Baths
Nestled on the outskirts of Egilsstaðir, the Vök Baths, which opened in the summer of 2019, have become one of the most popular hot springs in the country. Vök’s drinkable natural hot water makes it the only hot spring of its kind, and you can even drink the spring water of Lake Urriðavatn that feeds it. If you’re heading east on your Icelandic trip, you should consider checking out the Vök Baths. Let’s uncover everything there is to know about this natural marvel in Iceland.
The Story Behind Iceland’s Vök Baths
The Vök Baths are a modern take on the outdoor spa and were designed by the architect behind the infamous Blue Lagoon. They were discovered approximately ten winters ago by locals when snow did not entirely cover the crystal waters of Lake Urriðavatn where the geothermal resort is now based. In Iceland, if a lake does not freeze in the winter, there’s a real possibility of a hot spring lying underneath. The locals who found it called it Vök, and so the spa came to be called the Vök Baths.
How to Get to the Vök Baths
The Vök Geothermal Baths are located right at the entrance to the Eastfjords in East Iceland. The nearest town is Egilsstaðir is only 5 km away and makes the ideal starting point for your journey. If you’re starting here, head north on the Ring Road towards Akureyri. Once you’ve passed it, stay on Route 1 for about 4 km before turning right on 925. You should reach the Baths after a few hundred metres.
